Climate Analytics at COP29

11 Nov 2024 - 22 Nov 2024
09:00 - 17:00
Baku, Azerbaijan

COP29, the UN climate change conference, takes place in Baku this year. Come find us at events covering a range of our work, from NDC ambition, to the potential and pitfalls of different carbon dioxide removal methods, to how international collaboration could reduce both emissions and costs.

Wednesday 13 November

Thursday 14 November

Location: Blue Zone, UNIDO Pavilion
Date: 14 November
Time: 09:30-10:00

Description: The objectives of this meeting are:

  1. Reaffirming Support: Reaffirm GEF, UNIDO, CA and IIED’s commitment to supporting LDCs in adaptation, resilience, and access to climate finance through its support to the LDC Group on Climate Change.
  2. Partnerships: strengthen collaboration between LDC countries, GEF, UNIDO, CA and IIED to support climate adaptation action and resilience efforts.
  3. Issuance of Joint Statement: UNIDO and the LDC Group will issue a joint statement on their shared commitment to supporting LDCs.

Speakers: The event will be honoured by the participation of the Managing Director of UNIDO, the LDC Chair on Climate Change, the GEF Lead Environmental Specialist, and other distinguished guests, including Bill Hare.

Location: SIDE EVENT 3
Date: 14 November
Time: 16:45-18:15

The COP28 Global Stocktake affirmed the need to transition away from fossil fuels. This event will show through storytelling and expert discussion how to operationalise commitments to transition away from fossil fuel exploration and production in a just and orderly manner via third generation NDCs.

The event is cohosted with IISD, NewClimate Institute, IHRB and Environmental Defence Canada

Friday 15 November

Location: Singapore Pavilion
Date: 15 November
Time: 16:45-17:45

As part of Energy and Decarbonisation Day at COP29, our experts will present the Global Mitigation Potential Atlas, a web tool that let’s visitors explore potential cost and emissions savings won through international collaboration. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on opportunities for international collaboration on climate mitigation.

Keynote

  • Jim Skea, IPCC Chair

Speakers:

  • Dr Michiel Schaeffer, Lead Science Advisor, Climate Analytics
  • Dr Aniq Ahsan, Modelling Expert, A*STAR
  • James Grabert, Director, Mitigation Division, UNFCCC Secretariat (tbc)
  • Amanda McKee, Director for Knowledge and Learning, NDC Partnership
  • Beni Suryadi, Acting Executive Director, ASEAN Centre for Energy
  • Dirk Forester, CEO, IETA
  • Benedict Chia, Director-General, Climate Change, National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS), Singapore

This event is hosted by Singapore and the IPCC

Saturday 16 November

Location: German Pavilion
Date: 16 November
Time: 19:00-21:00

Join leading experts for a series of talks on:

  • Sector- and system-specific benchmarks to align NDCs with 1.5°C
  • Methodologies, indicators, and metrics for assessing adaptation progress
  • Development of a fair finance goal
  • Inclusive approaches to enabling effective climate action

Following the presentations, breakout groups will explore these topics in more detail. The evening will conclude with informal networking over finger food and drinks.

This event is hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Tuesday 19 November

Location: ICCI pavilion
Date: Nov 19
Time: n/a

Description: In addition to drastic emissions reductions, some level of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is required to achieve net zero greenhouse emissions and potentially long-term temperature decline. Emerging research highlights the need for such a warming reversal to limit cryosphere risks for centuries to come. However, CDR strategies come with varying degrees of side-effects affecting multiple sectors. This panel discussion will highlight the various CDR methods and explore their potential and drawbacks. It will also establish the need for a preventive CDR capacity.

Moderator:

  • Pam Pearson, ICCI

Speakers:

This event is organised by PROVIDE with input from the RESCUE consortium.

Location: ICCI pavilion
Date: Nov 19
Time: n/a

Findings from the PROVIDE research project indicate that achieving Paris Agreement goals can limit the threat of irreversible tipping points in the Earth system. This event will consider the reversible and irreversible impacts of climate overshoot on permafrost, peatlands, glaciers, and sea ice.

Friday 22 November

Location: NDC Partnership Pavilion
Date: 22 November
Time: 11:00am-12:00pm

Accessing finance for effective implementation of NDCs and LT-LEDS is crucial for achieving the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement, building resilience, and fostering sustainable development. However, ensuring the bankability and effective execution of these strategies remains a persistent challenge for developing countries leading to a growing implementation gap.

This event will share key insights and lessons from the last round of NDC submissions, focusing on how to design and implement bankable NDCs 3.0. With developing countries facing persistent challenges in ensuring the financial viability of NDCs and LT-LEDS, the event will explore practical strategies for closing implementation gaps. Drawing on Climate Analytics’ analysis of LT-LEDS in Africa and support provided to SIDS and LDCs since the submission of iNDCs, the session will present findings on common barriers, and actionable steps for successful implementation, including the role of Climate Finance Units.
