Dr Camilo Gomez
Climate Adaption and Risk Analyst
Climate Science and Impacts

Dr Camilo Gomez Zapata is a Climate Adaptation and Risk Analyst within the Science team at Climate Analytics. He is a georisks expert specialising in multi-hazard risk assessment, with over ten years' experience across various engineering and scientific projects.
Before joining Climate Analytics in February 2025, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Doctoral Researcher at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences from 2018. His work focused on assessing loss and damage from climate risks (heatwaves, floods from heavy rain) and geophysical risks (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions). He developed state-of-the-art exposure models for buildings and populations, assessing the reliability of critical infrastructure in targeted areas of Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Spain, Germany, and Italy. His research included analysing cumulative damage and losses from cascading and compound hazards and forecasting human casualties and displacement through risk scenarios.
Additionally, he has contributed to risk communication initiatives, including stakeholder engagement, hands-on training, data dissemination, and promoting open access to scientific data and software.
Before moving to Europe in 2016, he worked for three years in Colombia for an environmental regulatory authority, focusing on climate adaptation and risk mitigation, as well as in geotechnical engineering and cartography consulting.
He holds a PhD in Georisks from the University of Potsdam (Germany), a Master’s degree in Earth Sciences and Environment from Université Grenoble Alpes (France), a Master’s degree in Engineering Seismology from IUSS Pavia (Italy); additionally, he earned a postgraduate degree in Geotechnics from the University of Medellin (Colombia) and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Geology from the National University of Colombia.
