Richard Black is Climate Analytics' Head of Communications, based in Berlin.

Richard's background lies in journalism and broadcasting, having spent 20 years with BBC World Service and BBC News covering science and global environmental issues for radio, television and the website. His 1999 radio series Warm World was the BBC's first documentary exploration of climate change impacts and responses around the world.

After leaving the BBC in 2012 he worked as Director of Communications for the Global Ocean Commission before setting up and directing the UK-based Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), where he conceived and initiated the Net Zero Tracker. As a consultant, his work has encompassed analysis and report writing, organisational strategy development and training. Immediately prior to joining Climate Analytics, he was Director of Policy and Strategy at the global clean energy think-tank Ember.

Richard is the author of two books - Denied, the Rise and Fall of Climate Contrarianism (2018), and The Future of Energy (2024). In 2023 he received the Al-Attiyah Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Energy Journalism. He holds a Natural Sciences degree from Cambridge University, and is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London.
