Dr Anja Katzenberger
Climate Data Analyst
Climate Science and Impacts

Dr Anja Katzenberger works in the Climate Science and Impacts Team in the Berlin office. Her research focuses on climate impacts, with a particular emphasis on tropical cyclones in the Pacific region. She contributes to projects aimed at building resilience to climate-related loss and damage in Pacific Island countries and the Philippines.
In previous research, Anja worked on large-scale atmospheric circulation and its response to global warming. She conducted simulations using idealised climate models to systematically investigate fundamental questions in climate science, including atmospheric memory, and worked with the latest generation of climate models to assess projected changes in monsoon circulations. She has also examined the socio-economic impacts of climate change, including effects on the agricultural sector.
Anja is actively engaged in the international climate modelling community and leads a working group on multi-model ensembles within the Fresh Eyes on CMIP initiative.
She is also committed to science communication and contributed to a chapter in a climate related GEO book series. Her work has been featured in international and national media, including the BBC, The Economist, and Die Zeit.
Anja holds a PhD in Climate Physics from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the University of Potsdam. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and a Master’s degree in Environmental Modeling from LMU Munich. She received scholarships from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes and the Boell Foundation.
