Global mitigation potential atlas

The Global Mitigation Potential Atlas (GMPA) is a web-based analytical platform that enables users to identify cost-effective climate mitigation opportunities within and across countries, supporting international cooperation beyond purely national approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Building on a successful pilot launched at COP28, the Atlas has evolved through multiple phases of development and expansion. Initially focused on nine Southeast Asian countries, it has grown into a global platform covering an increasing number of countries and sectors, with continued expansion underway. Through enhanced modelling, policy analysis, and stakeholder engagement, the Atlas provides robust evidence to support climate decision-making at national, regional, and international levels.

The platform combines energy system modelling, geographical analysis, policy assessments, and country-specific data to identify transformative opportunities for emissions reductions. It highlights renewable energy investment potential, energy transition pathways, sectoral mitigation options, and opportunities for international and cross-border collaboration. The Atlas also enables users to explore future mitigation pathways through enhanced temporal modelling and collaborative scenarios.

As the platform continues to develop, it is expanding country and sectoral coverage, improving data accessibility and usability, strengthening policy validation through engagement with national experts, and introducing new analytical capabilities to better support governments, investors, researchers, and civil society.

Designed to support the development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), net zero strategies, and Paris Agreement-aligned sectoral transitions, the Global Mitigation Potential Atlas provides an evolving global evidence base for identifying mitigation potential and fostering international cooperation on climate action.
