Where are we and where do we want to go - impacts avoided by limiting warming to 1.5°C

The landmark report on the impacts of 1.5 °C global warming recently released by the IPCC, provides comprehensive evidence of the impacts of climate change today and how they will increase with 1.5°C warming and even more with 2°C. The consortium project HAPPI-DE, with partners from Goethe-Universität Frankfurt (GU), Climate Service Center (GERICS), Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum GmbH, Hamburg (DKRZ) and Climate Analytics, has contributed significantly to the science base underlying the 1.5°C special report.

HAPPI-DE has specifically contributed global and regional climate model simulations, as well as impact model simulations in the agriculture and water sector. The findings of the special report are of great relevance for the political processes currently underway within the climate negotiations, in particular the “Talanoa Dialogue” that will be concluded at the upcoming climate conference (COP) in Katowice in December. The Dialogue will be centered around the guiding questions of ‘where are we?,’ ‘where do we want to go?’ and ‘how do we get there?’ The results of the HAPPI-DE project and the findings of the IPCC special report on the climate impacts of 1.5°C more generally will help to inform the first two of those questions.

The symposium will showcase the main findings of HAPPI-DE in the context of the IPCC special report and will discuss its significance for the upcoming climate conference and the Talanoa Dialogue with experts from government and civil society.
