Keeping 1.5°C in reach in order to avoid the crossing of tipping points in the climate system

The Paris Agreement commits all countries to take ambitious steps to guarantee a low carbon future and limit warming to 1.5°C. This goal is still in reach but requires immediate and ambitious action across all sectors of society.

Exceeding 1.5°C warming would increase the risks of crossing tipping points with potential far-reaching and irreversible consequences. However, scientific information on these tipping points remains scattered.

At this high-level event, Climate Analytics experts outlined the latest IPCC WGIII science, 1.5°C compatible national pathways and sectoral transformations, and the Government of Switzerland made a call for an IPCC Special Report on “Climate Tipping Points and their Implications for Habitability and Resources”.
