This technical report was commissioned by African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) to inform policymakers of the shortcomings and opportunities for adaptation to climate change in Africa.

Despite large uncertainty, there are several robust conclusions from published literature for policy makers and research agendas: agriculture everywhere in Africa runs some risk to be negatively affected by climate change; existing cropping systems and infrastructure will have to change to meet future demand.

Produced in collaboration with the African Climate Finance Hub, the report says deep global emissions reductions are the best way to head off Africa’s crippling adaptation costs.

The 1.5°C National Pathway Explorer tool shows that under current policies, South Africa will not reach its climate goals. To reach the goal of 1.5°C, emissions will need to fall significantly.

This report provides an overview of the state of the energy transition in sub-Saharan Africa. Its choice of energy for the future will be decisive in achieving its sustainable development ambitions, including clean and affordable electricity access for all.
