A stress test for coal in Europe under the Paris Agreement
The project will define a concrete date for coal phase out in the European electricity mix and a shut down schedule for each existing or planned coal power plant in the European Union, in order to meet the temperature limit set out in the Paris Agreement.

This project is a first ever attempt to provide science-based goalposts for phase out of coal from the European Union’s energy mix, informing investors, policy makers and civil society about the consequences of the Paris Agreement for Europe’s coal industry.
The project will deliver a concrete exit date for coal from the EU electricity mix and a shut-down schedule for each existing or planned coal power plant in the EU. To achieve this, the project will define coal related emissions pathways consistent with 1.5°C and 2°C temperature limits for the EU’s power sector.
Secondly, it will determine how the existing and planned European coal capacity fits under these emission pathways, which will provide a science-based shut-down schedule for present and planned coal power plants in the EU.
The report will be launched in February 2017.
