Paris Agreement: strengths, challenges and next steps
What does the Paris Agreement deliver for vulnerable countries and what does its 1.5oC limit mean for European climate ambition?
Climate Analytics is organising an evening event focusing of some of the key issues for vulnerable countries following the adoption of the Paris Agreement, an exploration of what the 1.5°C temperature limit means for European climate policy and steps in the implementation of the agreement.
The discussion will revolve around these topics:
1. What does the Paris Agreement deliver?
The Paris Agreement is widely viewed as historic and has delivered a higher level of ambition than many had believed possible. How strong is the agreement legally and politically? The perspective of the vulnerable countries will be brought to bear on these issues.
2. What does the 1.5°C temperature mean for mitigation ambition in Europe?
The Paris Agreement included in its legally binding objective the goal to hold warming well below 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. Many countries are now beginning to examine their level of mitigation ambition and whether it needs to be increased as a consequence of this agreement. The implications of limiting warming to 1.5°C for European mitigation ambition will be outlined.
3. What are the next steps for Implementing the Paris Agreement?
The Paris Agreement is opened for signature in New York on April 22 and already there are signs of many countries preparing for ratification. There is an immense amount of work needed to implement the agreement and this presentation will give a perspective on the main priorities, including entry into force and the development of other areas of the agreement.
