Job Description

We are currently seeking a new senior scientist for our Modelling & Mitigation Pathway Analysis Team. Within the overarching Climate Policy Team comprised of more than 30 colleagues, the Modelling & Mitigation Pathway Analysis Team and its experts work closely together with the Climate Policy Analysis Team.

The talented team is engaged with a large and exciting variety of projects, and continuously develops new research and applied policy projects. In its work, the team has a major interest in energy-system transformation, coal and other fossil-fuel phase-out at international, national, sub-national and sectoral levels, tracking and assessing climate action at international, national, sub-national and sectoral levels, combining both qualitative and quantitative scientific and policy expertise, approaches, data and models. Examples of current and past projects are the Climate Action Tracker, IMPACT and RIPPLES, coal phase out studies at global and regional/country level. New projects, incl. under H2020, build on these and earlier successful projects. The team is at the moment heavily engaged in many cross-sectoral country-level analyses providing expert advise on Paris-Compatible mitigation pathways.

Your Responsibilities:

  • You are an expert, leading analyses and projects, supervising junior staff, and supporting the team leader
  • You are a senior colleague who is a thought leader in the area of economy-wide energy mitigation with a focus on energy system transformation, providing guidance and leadership to junior colleagues
  • You coordinate and lead projects focusing on mitigation pathway and energy transformation analysis, especially related to the phase out of fossil fuels in highly-renewable energy system futures
  • You maintain existing analytical tools and develop new approaches for estimating energy system mitigation required to meet stringent mitigation pathways, incl. for estimating the sustainability trade-offs and co-benefits of climate policy and energy transformation to aid in decision-making.
  • You ensure scientific integrity and overall quality control.
  • Representation of Climate Analytics and project teams/consortiums for dissemination of results are your successes. You are present at conferences and lead publications/reports.
  • Increasing the scientific profile of the organisation in climate mitigation analysis is a core element of your work.
  • You contribute to the fundraising and grant writing activities of your team supported by our project development team.

Your Profile

You will ideally have the following qualifications and skills:

  • An advanced degree in energy studies, engineering, economics, or related climate-change discipline and at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • A scientific track record in the field of climate mitigation and prior experience using or developing Integrated Assessment Models or economic and energy-system optimisation tools
  • Deep knowledge of mitigation topics as covered by the IPCC’s WGIII; author contributions to AR5, SR15, or AR6 are an asset
  • Proven Python programming skills
  • Proven management and leadership skills with sense for team work and ability to interact with a diverse array of people
  • Experience in project management and coordination
  • Track record in project or research grant acquisition
  • Excellent English writing and verbal skills. Basic German skills are welcome, but not required, other language skills are an asset
  • Willingness to travel
