Job description

The Director is responsible for developing the overall Africa regional strategy including content development and lead, partnerships development and maintenance and funds mobilization for the office, and must ensure its effective implementation, monitoring and reporting of progress to the Management Team and Executive Team of CA. In addition, the Director of the office is an experienced individual that oversees the day-to-day operations of the office. The Director will be responsible for managing and developing a team of administrative and content staff, as well as developing and implementing office policies and procedures in line with broader company policies. Additionally, the Office Director will be responsible for budgeting and forecasting for the office and will be the primary point of contact for external funders, and partners.

Core Responsibilities

  • Managing and developing the Climate Analytics Africa team, both content and administrative, as well as developing and implementing office policies and procedures in line with the broader organisation’s policies and with local laws and regulations
  • Leading the development and management of Climate Analytics in Africa
  • Lead the strategic development and implementation of low-carbon and climate-resilient development initiatives, strategies and projects in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Lead training and capacity-building programs for LDCs and African countries on climate finance through scaling up mechanisms that improve the endogenous mobilization of and access to climate finance for adaptation and mitigation objectives in-country
  • Advance the role of science to inform policy development and implementation to reduce vulnerability to climate change and improve resilience building in African LDCs
  • Lead, guided and strengthened resource mobilization and partnership strategies for Paris Agreement-aligned initiatives in African LDCs, particularly in West Africa
  • Identify and recruit needed experts in their field to lead and/or execute projects and activities
  • Identify and develop new areas of work as appropriate and expand existing workstreams as appropriate, taking into account the needs, priorities and expectations of the countries in the region
  • Lead and coordinate support for national processes and domestic private sector entities for sustainable financing in LDCs
  • Lead, develop and implement Climate Analytics work programs in Africa and LDCs
  • Lead, guided and strengthen resource mobilization and partnership strategies for Paris Agreement-aligned initiatives in African countries
  • Responsible for developing the overall African regional strategy, for its implementation, monitoring and reporting on progress to the organisation
  • Work with the Head of Implementation Strategies, the Head of Global Offices, the CEO and other team leads to consolidate existing work, and support the development of future opportunities, in the region including in relation to adaptation, impacts and vulnerability, climate finance and mitigation
  • Responsible for reaching financial stability and sustainability for the operations of Climate Analytics Africa
  • With support from the Head of Finance and COO, ensure adequate budgeting and forecasting for the office
  • Take financial decisions and exercise financial controls in line with organizational policies and local laws and regulations to ensure the fiscal sustainability of the Africa office. This includes submitting financial reports to the Head of Finance and COO
  • Develop, a pipeline of projects for the office with the view to ensure stable and secure funding, increase regional presence and prospective new areas of development
  • Ensure the quality of the Climate Analytics Africa outputs match the high standards of the Organisation and appropriate review and sign-off procedures are followed
  • Review the progress of projects being Implemented through the CA Africa office and assess/take corrective action or escalate risks to the Management Team for support or intervention
  • Manage and be responsible for the Climate Analytics Africa staff, and facilitate a positive and safe work environment:
  • Convene and chair weekly meetings of the Africa office and CA team members in the African region
  • In coordination with the Organisation’s HR team, exercise administrative oversight for HR and organizational matters, with the support of a project/office manager as part of the Africa office staff, and ensure alignment with the Organisation’s HR policies
  • Develop a strategy for personnel planning, including identification of team composition that matches needs, recruitment and retention of staff
  • In coordination with the Organisation’s HR, lead the performance management for office employees, including professional development and training plans as identified in annual performance reviews
  • Act as the legal representative of Climate Analytics Africa under delegations from the CEO
  • Ensure Climate Analytics Africa is compliant with CA’s policies and local laws and regulations

CA Global Responsibilities

  • Represent the Africa office on the Management Team of CA and regularly attend its meetings, participate in, and contribute to its work, and where requested attend the Executive Management Team and the Programme Strategies Team and provide a regular update from the Management Team to the team members
  • Coordinate and lead office presentations at global team meetings
  • Ensure Climate Analytics Africa is aligned with and contributes to, the overall mission and strategy of the Organization
  • Ensure Climate Analytics Africa contributes to the strategy development processes of CA
  • Strengthen collaboration and coordination with the Headquarters and other offices
  • Report to the Head of Global Offices on the CA Executive Team
  • Work closely with the Offices Director and CEO in developing Climate Analytics Africa as a regional hub
  • Liaise with the COO and Head of Finance for reporting and monitoring, including oversight of financial administration of the office

External Responsibilities

  • Represent Climate Analytics Africa in the region and conduct outreach activities (events, media) aiming at increasing the recognition and visibility of CA
  • Travel internationally and within the region to represent the organisation and its projects, including at appropriate high-level settings
  • Build up and maintain strategic relationships with NGOs, stakeholders, partners and donors, including with universities in the region

Your profile

  • A master’s degree in the environment or climate-related studies, such as environmental management, climate science, social science, economics, international development or a related field
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in climate change, sustainable development, capacity building
  • At least 5 years of proven management and team leadership skills and experience with a demonstrated aptitude for teamwork and the ability to manage a diverse array of people
  • Track record of inter-disciplinary work and a profound interest in understanding and addressing international, regional, national and sub-national challenges to climate change policy
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills with the ability to summarize and synthesize big volumes of information and/or data for policy and project recommendations/actions
  • Proven track record on adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa including policy, science and/or international negotiations in the UNFCCC
  • Excellent understanding and experience in National Adaptation Planning and Nationally Determined Contributions to revision and implementation
  • Good understanding of climate finance processes, modalities and sources
  • Strong/advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with openness towards learning new software and other working tools
  • High organization skills, being detail-oriented and a motivated self-starter and a team player able to interact and cooperate with a diverse array of people, including remotely in a highly international team
  • The ability to actively seek the knowledge needed to complete assignments and share knowledge with others, communicating and presenting information in a clear and organized manner
  • Strong track record and experience in project acquisition, overall management and coordination of large-scale projects
  • Experience in international climate change negotiations is an asset
  • Our internal working language is English. Therefore, fluency in English is required. However, for the requirements of this position, fluency in French is also required
  • Willingness to travel regionally and internationally on a needed basis
