A scientific framework for climate bonds

The Climate Bond Initiative is an international, investor-focused non-profit organisation, focusing on mobilising bonds earmarked for climate change solutions: ‘green bonds’. A central element in Climate Bond Initiative's strategy is to ensure that eligible project categories certified under its climate bond standards truly represent mitigation actions that climate science finds most relevant in order to keep global warming below 2°C above preindustrial temperatures.

The climate science framework project establishes a scientifically robust and transparent link between the latest climate-economic science data and Climate Bond Initiative's project universe (its “taxonomy”). The framework is based on a joint research effort between Climate Analytics and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

The scope of work is based on analysing the existing body of research and data on emission pathways and related technology alternatives and mitigation impacts, behind, for example, the International Governmental Panel on Climate Change's 5th Assessment Report.
